Tropical Storm Warning for Jefferson County: Act Immediately
A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for Jefferson County, including Birmingham and Hoover, from NWS Birmingham, AL. Prepare for hazardous winds up to 50 mph and significant flooding; move to shelter immediately.
JEFFERSON COUNTY, AL – A Tropical Storm Warning has been issued for Jefferson County, including Birmingham and Hoover, effective immediately, October 9 at 9:56 PM CDT, by the National Weather Service (NWS) in Birmingham, AL. This warning is in effect until October 10, 2026, at 6:00 AM UTC (1:00 AM CDT).
Residents are advised to move to safe shelter before hazardous winds begin. Peak wind gusts of up to 50 mph are forecast, with potential for sustained winds of 39 to 57 mph. Prepare for limited wind damage, including to porches, awnings, sheds, and unanchored mobile homes. Expect broken tree limbs and some trees snapped or uprooted, potentially causing road obstructions and scattered power and communication outages. Complete all property protection efforts as soon as possible.
A Flood Watch is also in effect. Additional rainfall of 1-3 inches, with locally higher amounts, is expected, posing a significant threat for moderate flooding. Emergency plans should include the potential for evacuations and rescues. Heed any flood watches and warnings immediately; failure to act may result in serious injury or loss of life. Rivers and tributaries may swell, and floodwaters could enter structures and cause rapid inundation in low-lying areas, making driving hazardous. Some road and bridge closures are anticipated.
The NWS reports that tornadoes are not expected at this time. For more information and preparedness resources, visit ready.gov/hurricanes.
