Tropical Storm Watch Issued for Jefferson County: Prepare for High Winds, Flooding
A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Jefferson County, including Birmingham and Hoover, effective immediately, with hazardous winds, moderate flooding, and possible tornadoes expected in the next 48 hours.
JEFFERSON COUNTY – The National Weather Service (NWS) in Birmingham has issued a Tropical Storm Watch for Jefferson County, including Birmingham and Hoover, effective October 8 at 10:05 AM CDT. Tropical storm-force winds are possible within the next 48 hours.
Residents should immediately begin preparations for hazardous wind, potential moderate flooding, and the possibility of a few tornadoes. The NWS forecasts peak winds of 25-35 mph with gusts up to 55 mph, with the potential for sustained winds of 39 to 57 mph. Damage to outdoor property, broken tree limbs, and scattered power outages are possible. Efforts to secure loose items should be underway, and preparations must be completed before winds become hazardous.
Heavy rainfall is also expected, with 3-6 inches and locally higher amounts. This poses a significant threat for moderate flooding. Emergency plans should account for potential evacuations and rescues. Heed any flood watches and warnings; failure to take action can result in serious injury or loss of life. Rivers and tributaries may swell, and localized rapid inundation is possible in low-lying areas.
The NWS indicates a somewhat favorable situation for tornadoes. While the potential is limited to a few, residents should prepare to relocate to safe shelter if their current location is vulnerable. If a tornado warning is issued, be ready to shelter quickly.
This Tropical Storm Watch is set to expire on October 8 at 6:15 PM UTC. For more information and hurricane preparedness resources, visit ready.gov/hurricanes.
