Canadian Wildfire Smoke Reaches Boston, Northeast

Why it matters locally: The widespread smoke plume impacting Boston and other parts of the Northeast is also expected to affect air quality across New Hampshire, potentially leading to hazy skies and health advisories for sensitive groups.

BOSTON – Smoke originating from wildfires in Canada has moved into the Boston metropolitan area, affecting air quality across the region. This atmospheric condition has prompted the issuance of air quality alerts for parts of the Northeast and Midwest. Forecasters identified the widespread smoke plume as a result of active wildfires burning in various Canadian provinces. These fires have generated significant smoke, which prevailing winds have transported south and eastward over long distances. Residents in affected areas, including Massachusetts and other states, may experience reduced visibility and hazy skies. Public health officials recommend that individuals monitor local air quality reports, particularly those with respiratory sensitivities. The smoke is expected to continue impacting air quality for an unspecified duration. Authorities advise individuals to take precautions as conditions warrant.
