Coastal Flood Warning, High Surf, and Rip Current Threats for MD/VA Coasts

A Beach Hazards Statement, Coastal Flood Warning, and High Surf Advisory have been issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Wakefield VA affecting Maryland Beaches, and Accomack and Northampton Counties in Virginia. Residents in these areas should take immediate action to protect property and avoid hazardous conditions.

The Coastal Flood Warning is in effect until 4 AM EDT Friday, September 25, with one to two feet of inundation above ground level expected in low-lying areas. This flooding will result in an elevated threat of property damage and could close numerous roads, threatening homes and businesses. Water will extend inland along tidal rivers and bays.

A High Surf Advisory is active until 6 PM EDT Thursday, September 24, with large breaking waves of 8 to 12 feet in the surf zone. Concurrently, a high risk of rip currents is in effect through Thursday evening under a Beach Hazards Statement.

The NWS advises taking necessary actions to protect flood-prone property. If travel is required, do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth. Inexperienced swimmers and all others should remain out of the water due to dangerous surf conditions and hazardous rip currents.
