Split Couple's Coastal Dream Becomes International Lifestyle Brands

Mirela Rus and Ionut Leonard Copoiu transformed their passion for the Adriatic Sea into Break Time Croatia, an international lifestyle brand, and Villa Mar-Escape, a luxury villa rental business. The couple relocated to Split, Croatia, in October 2015, leaving behind careers in journalism and real estate development.
Copoiu's hobby of crafting nautical bracelets became a full-time venture when construction delays impacted their real estate plans. Two months after arriving in Split, they opened their first Break Time store at Trogirska 8, despite not knowing the local language.
Break Time Croatia specializes in handcrafted nautical jewelry made with durable, waterproof materials designed to withstand saltwater and sun. Copoiu designs and crafts items featuring anchor motifs, nautical shackles, and sailing ropes. The Split atelier offers custom laser engraving. The brand donates 2% of sales to the Blue World Institute through its #SaveMarineLife initiative, supporting marine conservation.
The brand expanded to six stores in Croatian cities before focusing on its original Split atelier and a strong online presence. Rus, with a background in media and marketing, built a dedicated online community.
Through social media, including TikTok, Rus and Copoiu share local tips and travel advice for Split and the Dalmatian coast, offering recommendations for dining, hidden gems, day trips, and practical travel information. Their Instagram and Facebook pages feature behind-the-scenes crafting, customer stories, and coastal scenery.
Rus and Copoiu balance design, hospitality, and environmental stewardship. They build a sustainable life in Croatia through artisan quality, worldwide shipping, and premium real estate.
