Bunnell Man Arrested for Animal Cruelty

A Bunnell man faces an aggravated animal cruelty charge after deputies found a 27-year-old horse in his care severely malnourished. Jim Tyrone Lee, 41, was arrested Sept. 12.

Flagler County Sheriff's Office deputies discovered Laredo, a gelding, in critical condition during a welfare check July 21 on County Road 13. The horse's ribs, spine, and hips were visible.

Investigators determined Lee, who was responsible for Laredo's care, knew the horse was malnourished but did not provide adequate nutrition. A veterinarian later confirmed the condition stemmed from inadequate nutrition and an untreated hormonal disease.

Laredo was moved to a local boarding stable before arriving at SKC Hands Up Horse Rescue on Aug. 7. The horse has since gained approximately 150 pounds.

Lee was released on a $5,000 bond. The Sheriff's Office encourages anyone suspecting animal abuse or neglect to contact them at 386-313-4911.
