The State Archives of Florida is calling on residents to help document Florida's participation in America's 250th anniversary celebration by donating photographs. Secretary of State Cord Byrd announced the initiative, emphasizing the opportunity for communities across the state, from the shores of the Intracoastal Waterway in West Palm Beach to the Panhandle, to preserve their place in this historic event.
The photo donation drive coincides with National Archives Month, which began October 1. The State Archives of Florida houses an extensive collection, including over 1.5 million still images and 7,000 videos, making it one of the nation's largest photographic archives. Donated photographs will contribute to this significant collection, ensuring local celebrations and events, whether in a vibrant downtown like West Palm Beach's or a quiet neighborhood park, are remembered for future generations.
"By donating your photos, you can preserve your community’s place in this once-in-a-lifetime celebration," said Secretary of State Cord Byrd. "Consider contributing to our state’s history by donating your photographs and leave your mark on America’s and Florida’s shared legacy."
Residents interested in contributing can email the State Archives of Florida at [email protected] to discuss the donation process. The archives are seeking original photographs that capture America250FL community events and celebrations. Donated images must meet minimum quality standards, with phone-taken pictures likely acceptable if they are at least 5 megapixels. After submission, donors will receive a Deed of Gift form to transfer ownership and usage rights, with photographers credited in collection records.
The State Archives prefers TIFF and RAW file formats but will accept JPEGs. Donated photos are included in the Florida Photographic Collection and accessible to researchers, with the possibility of some appearing on Florida Memory. Examples of historical photos from Florida's 1976 bicentennial celebrations, such as parade floats and park ceremonies, are available for reference. Imagine seeing photos from West Palm Beach's own bicentennial festivities alongside those from across the state.
