Klatt: Michigan's Whittingham Not Linked to QB Underwood

In Michigan's Week 1 win over Western Michigan, Underwood completed 12 of 22 passes for 170 yards, throwing one touchdown and two interceptions. Whittingham indicated Underwood's starting position is not guaranteed. "He's our QB right now, and it's not something that's infinite," Whittingham said. "At some point, we've got to turn a corner." Underwood reportedly expressed surprise at these comments.

Klatt views Saturday's game against No. 11 Oklahoma as particularly significant due to this dynamic. "I think that makes this week interesting," Klatt said. "How effective is he? How long does he stay in the game if he is ineffective? That's a question."

Whittingham, who arrived at Michigan after a 20-season tenure at Utah, inherited the current roster. Klatt emphasized that Whittingham must evaluate Underwood and determine how to best position him for success. "I'm a firm believer that the best coaches put their players in the best position to be successful," Klatt explained. "So you've got to decide: What can our guy do well... and now let's build a system around what he can do well." Klatt described Michigan's Week 1 performance against Western Michigan as mismatched.

The Wolverines face a stronger opponent in the No. 11 Sooners and their defense on Saturday. If Underwood falters again, Whittingham's patience will be a key point for Michigan fans.
