Eagles Win Season Opener: Hurts Shines vs. Commanders

Belle Glade residents following the NFL witnessed a strong start to the season for quarterback Jalen Hurts and the Philadelphia Eagles. The Eagles defeated the Washington Commanders 24-22 in their Week 1 matchup, with Hurts playing a central role.

Hurts appeared to find his rhythm under the new offensive scheme, emphasizing the importance of fundamental execution. "When you’re playing the position, a lot of it is about making sure you’re in the right play," Hurts said. "When you’re doing the right thing, that takes no talent. So are we in the best run? Are we protecting ourselves in protection? Is everybody aligned? Doing those little things first — I think that’s most important."

The Eagles offense showed flashes of potential. Hurts threw for 203 yards and three touchdowns, adding 46 rushing yards. In the fourth quarter, Hurts connected with tight end Dallas Goedert for a 43-yard touchdown, helping the Eagles hold off a Commanders comeback. Head coach Nick Sirianni praised Hurts' ability to create explosive plays.

New offensive coordinator Sean Mannion seems to be giving Hurts more freedom. The offense also supported a strong performance from running back Saquon Barkley, who gained 83 yards on 15 carries. Receiver Dontayvion Wicks made an impact with a 64-yard reception and a nine-yard touchdown.

The Eagles offense showed progress despite adjustments to the run scheme and receiver Makai Lemon recovering from a hamstring injury. "I think collectively, we’ve got a lot to build on — and obviously a lot to correct," Hurts told reporters. "I’m excited to get back into the process of becoming the team that we’re supposed to become." The team's goal is to contend for a Super Bowl.
