ATLANTA — The Atlanta Falcons overwhelmed the New Orleans Saints 45-24 on Sunday night at the Superdome, spoiling the Saints' 20th-anniversary celebration of their 2006 "Domecoming." Running back Bijan Robinson set the tone early with a 59-yard touchdown run on the game's third play, silencing the home crowd and establishing Atlanta's dominance.
This victory marks a significant turnaround for the Falcons, who started the season 0-2 due to quarterback injuries. With Michael Penix Jr. healthy, the team has now secured two consecutive road wins, including a 35-14 victory over the Packers last Thursday. The 45 points scored against the Saints represent the most Atlanta has achieved in over a decade and the second-highest total ever against their rivals in 114 meetings.
Falcons safety Jessie Bates emphasized the team's physicality. "Those guys came out and were the most physical team on the field," Bates said. "They set the tone for us, and it was easy for our defense to go out there and keep the momentum going for our team." Guard Matthew Bergeron added, "Once you're in that position, you've got to, as we say, keep your foot on the neck." The Falcons maintained their lead throughout the game, reaching 24-7 by halftime and preventing the Saints from mounting a comeback.
The lopsided score prompted many Saints fans to leave before the fourth quarter. Falcons wide receiver Drake London noted the satisfaction of running up the score, recalling the 2023 season finale when Saints backup quarterback Jameis Winston opted for an additional touchdown instead of taking a knee. This win puts the Falcons in a strong position as they prepare to host the Ravens on Sunday night. A victory against the Ravens would keep them competitive with the Carolina Panthers in the NFC South race.
