NC Rep. Edwards Denies Affair Allegations in Ethics Probe
The House Ethics Committee launched its investigation into Rep. Chuck Edwards, R-N.C., after a witness contacted the panel describing improper behavior, according to CNN and NOTUS reporting from late April 2026. Sources told NOTUS the bipartisan committee, chaired by Rep. Michael Guest, R-Miss., and led by ranking member Rep. Mark DeSaulnier, D-Calif., is probing allegations that the 65-year-old congressman from Flat Rock engaged in a long-term affair with his former deputy chief of staff, hired as a legislative assistant in 2021. Edwards, married since 1980, represents North Carolina's 11th Congressional District, spanning 16 southwestern counties including Buncombe, Henderson and Rutherford, where the alleged relationship became common knowledge among staff and North Carolina delegation members, leading to aide departures from his Washington office.
Edwards' adviser dismissed the claims as politically driven ahead of his November re-election bid against Democrat Jamie Ager, a Fairview farmer and small business owner. House rules prohibit romantic relationships between members and staff, and Axios first reported on April 30 that Edwards and his staff received emails from a committee lawyer authorizing the probe into unspecified allegations, later detailed as sexual harassment by CNN citing two sources. The investigation, which could span months or years, has not yet corroborated specifics, though it echoes prior Ethics Committee cases since 2017.
In Western North Carolina, where Edwards owns six McDonald's franchises, the probe amplifies existing controversies, including a banned constituent who criticized his SNAP policy stances and reports of hygiene issues at his restaurants. The Asheville-area representative, known for championing mountain district priorities like tourism and disaster recovery post-Helene, now navigates this ethics cloud amid Democratic attacks branding him untrustworthy. No timeline for resolution has been announced as the committee gathers interviews and evidence.
