Residential construction is a major contributor to Florida's economy, but for every housing unit built the demand for resources like energy, water and land grows. Because of this, it is important now, more than ever, to build sustainable communities, which follow environmentally-friendly design and construction practices. When it comes to building a sustainable community, UF/IFAS Extension can help. Through educational materials, applied research, and initiatives like the Program for Resource Efficient Communities (PREC), UF/IFAS Extension can provide you with the information you need to live more sustainably.

When it comes to building a sustainable community, UF/IFAS Extension can help. Through educational materials, applied research, and initiatives like the Program for Resource Efficient Communities (PREC), UF/IFAS Extension can provide you with the information you need to live more sustainably. Sustainability Starts Here Building a sustainable community begins with individual impact. Through PREC, UF/IFAS Extension offers resources to help you reduce environmental deterioration within your community. PREC supports sustainable community development via direct training, education and consultation. Find out how you can get involved in your local community to minimize waste and non-renewable resource consumption. Florida-Friendly Partners PREC works closely with local certification agencies to promote sustainable design, performance and management practices for community development. Some of these agencies include Audubon International, the Florida Green Building Coalition, the U.S. Green Building Council and the St. Johns River Water Management District's Florida Water Star program. See how these organizations are promoting more sustainable development. Community Planning & Design Getting involved on a local level is an integral part of developing sustainable communities. PREC works with local government through conducting educational workshops and overseeing the implementation of resource efficiency strategies and low-impact design practices that span the house, lot and community levels. PREC also influences real development projects and reviews residential and reviews plans for conservation.

Day of Caring 2026: 1,500 NH Volunteers Complete 125+ Projects Statewide

"This May, communities across New Hampshire came alive with something powerful, neighbors rolling up their sleeves for neighbors. Granite United Way’s Day of Caring once again proved that when people come together, the impact is extraordinary. This year, more than 1,500 volunteers completed over 125 projects spanning every corner of our footprint, from the Seacoast to the North Country. They landscaped. They painted. They cleaned up our shorelines, worked alongside seniors, read to children, and helped prepare summer camps for the season ahead. What Is Day of Caring? Day of Caring is New Hampshire’s largest single-day volunteer event, organized annually by Granite United Way. It mobilizes employees, businesses, and community members to provide hands-on support to local nonprofits that depend on volunteer power to complete meaningful wish-list projects throughout the year. Projects That Made a Difference Volunteers this year tackled everything from hands-on outdoor work to one-on-one connection with community members. Projects included: Landscaping and beautification at local nonprofits Shoreline and park cleanup Painting and facility improvements Companionship and activities with seniors Prepping summer camps and youth facilities for the season Each project was matched to a community organization’s specific needs — making sure that volunteer energy went exactly where it could do the most good. You can view images of volunteers at work from across our regions on Granite United Way’s Facebook page. Granite United Way’s North Country region is hosting Day of Caring on May 20th.
