SWFL Water District Approves $251.5M Budget for Water Projects

The Southwest Florida Water Management District's Governing Board adopted a $251.5 million budget for fiscal year 2027 on Tuesday, allocating $86.2 million to cooperative funding initiatives and grants for water resources projects. The budget aims to protect Florida's water resources and bolster the state's economic vitality.

Key initiatives funded by the FY2027 budget include $77.3 million for developing alternative water supplies, ensuring sufficient water for current and future reasonable and beneficial uses. An additional $28.5 million will support the improvement and management of critical flood control structures, water conservation facilities, canals, culverts, and levees.

The budget also earmarks $7.7 million for surface water restoration and water quality improvement projects, focusing on treating stormwater runoff before it enters local water bodies. Furthermore, $4.8 million is allocated for watershed management planning and the implementation of projects designed to address existing and potential flooding issues.

Through these cooperative funding partnerships, the District anticipates a total regional investment exceeding $160 million for sustainable alternative water supply development, water quality enhancements, and other water resource management efforts. The adopted millage rate for FY2027 is 0.1831 mill, which translates to approximately $18.31 annually for every $100,000 of taxable property value, or about $1.53 per month. The fiscal year runs from October 1, 2026, through September 30, 2027.
