Seek Shelter: Strong Thunderstorm Threatens Floyd, Bartow, Polk Counties

Residents in Floyd, Bartow, and Polk counties should seek shelter immediately due to a strong thunderstorm. The National Weather Service (NWS) Peachtree City GA issued a Special Weather Statement at 9:24 PM EDT, effective until 10:00 PM EDT tonight, September 20.

At 9:24 PM EDT, a strong thunderstorm was located near Lindale, approximately 9 miles southeast of Rome, moving southwest at 15 mph. This storm brings hazards including up to 40 mph wind, frequent cloud-to-ground lightning, and heavy rain. These conditions may cause minor damage to tree limbs and blow around light, unsecured objects. Heavy rain could lead to temporary street flooding, particularly in areas with poor drainage.

Impacted locations include Rome, Cedartown, Rockmart, Aragon, Cave Spring, Seney, Fish Creek, Lindale, and Van Wert.

The NWS advises that anyone outdoors should seek shelter immediately. If you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning. Motorists are urged to slow down and be prepared for potential loss of control due to hydroplaning on wet roads.
