Jefferson County Health Officials: Hantavirus Risk Remains Low

Jefferson County health officials said hantavirus poses no immediate threat to residents despite a recent outbreak aboard a cruise ship. No passengers from the affected vessel live in the county.

Hantavirus spreads primarily through deer mice. Humans contract the disease by handling rodents, touching their feces or urine, or suffering rodent bites. Ticks, mites, and fleas that feed on infected rodents can also transmit the virus indirectly.

Residents can reduce exposure by controlling rodents around their homes, especially in foothill areas. For rodent control information, call 303-232-6301.
