Monticello High School is proud to recognize 22 students who have earned the New York State Seal of Biliteracy, a distinction awarded to graduates who demonstrate a high level of proficiency in English and at least one additional language.

Monticello High School is proud to recognize 22 students who have earned the New York State Seal of Biliteracy, a distinction awarded to graduates who demonstrate a high level of proficiency in English and at least one additional language. The Seal of Biliteracy is affixed to a student’s diploma and noted on their transcript, signaling to colleges and employers that the student can read, write and communicate effectively in two languages. Earning the seal requires students to meet rigorous criteria in both English and a partner language.  In addition to meeting academic benchmarks, students must complete a culminating project and present their work before a panel, showcasing their language ability and cultural knowledge. In addition to recognizing bilingualism, the seal provides tangible benefits for students as they move beyond high school. Colleges may consider the distinction in admissions decisions, and some institutions offer college credit or advanced placement opportunities for students who earn the seal. In the workforce, bilingualism is a highly valued skill, opening doors in fields such as education, healthcare, business and public service. Beyond academics and career opportunities, the Seal of Biliteracy also celebrates cultural awareness and connection. Students who earn the seal demonstrate an ability to navigate multiple languages and cultures, an increasingly important skill in today’s diverse and interconnected world.
