Tropical Storm Watch Issued for Auburn, Opelika; Prepare for Severe Weather
A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for Auburn and Opelika in Lee County, urging residents to prepare for severe wind, flooding, and potential tornadoes by completing preparations immediately.
A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Auburn and Opelika in Lee County, effective immediately as of October 9 at 4:08 AM CDT. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Birmingham, AL, indicates that severe conditions are anticipated, with the watch set to expire at 7:15 AM CDT.
Residents should act now to complete preparations before hazardous wind conditions develop. Peak wind gusts are forecast between 10-20 mph, with potential for gusts up to 40 mph. Limited damage to property such as porches, awnings, and unanchored mobile homes is possible. Expect many large tree limbs to break and scattered power outages. Hazardous driving conditions are also anticipated.
A Flood Watch is in effect, with 1-3 inches of rain expected, and locally higher amounts possible. Moderate rainfall flooding may prompt evacuations and rescues. Rivers and tributaries may become swollen, and flood waters could enter structures. Heed all flood watches and warnings; failure to act may result in serious injury or loss of life.
The situation is also favorable for tornadoes. Emergency plans should include the potential for several tornadoes, some potentially intense. Those in manufactured homes or on boats should prepare to relocate to safe shelter. Listen for tornado watches and warnings and be ready to shelter quickly if a warning is issued. Significant impacts, including considerable damage and power loss, are possible from tornadoes.
