Emmet County Planning & Zoning is aware that claims have been circulating on social media that a data center proposal will be considered by the Planning Commission at their April meeting. We also have heard concerns that the Planning Commission is adopting ordinance language to allow or facilitate data centers. Please note the following facts: A data center proposal is NOT on the April 9 Planning Commission agenda. As of the date/time of this posting, no site plan, proposal, or inquiry regarding a possible data center has been received by the Emmet County Planning & Zoning department. The April 9 Planning Commission agenda includes discussion of Zoning Ordinance Text Amendments for storage uses. As part of this review process, the Planning Commission was provided analysis and sample ordinance language regarding data centers and battery energy storage systems (BESS). Currently the Emmet County Zoning Ordinance does not include provisions to regulate data centers and BESS facilities. State law prohibits exclusionary zoning – meaning the County cannot use the Zoning Ordinance to exclude a certain type of land use. It is therefore not possible to simply reject any data center proposal or adopt an ordinance that would ban data centers entirely. The Planning Commission is not reacting to a specific request, but rather they are working to get ahead of the issue by reviewing case studies and sample ordinances to determine how to appropriately regulate these uses within the law and in a way that best protects the health, safety, and welfare of our community. For more information, please review the Planning Commission Packet.

Blue Rhino Recipe: Espresso Bourbon Steak with Sweet Potatoes

"Espresso Bourbon Steak With Mashed Sweet Potatoes Prep Time: 20 minutes Cook Time: 15-20 minutes Serves: 4 Ingredients: For the Steak: 2 lbs steak (Ribeye or New York Strip), about 1-inch thick 2 tbsp olive oil 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 tbsp espresso powder 2 tbsp bourbon 1 tbsp brown sugar 1 tsp smoked paprika Salt and pepper to taste For the Mashed Sweet Potatoes: 2 large sweet potatoes, peeled and cubed 1/4 cup milk or cream 2 tbsp butter 1/4 tsp cinnamon Salt and pepper to taste Instructions: Prepare the Steak: In a small bowl, whisk together olive oil, minced garlic, espresso powder, bourbon, brown sugar, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper. Place the steak in a resealable bag or dish and pour the marinade over it. Ensure the steak is well coated. Marinate for at least 30 minutes, or up to 2 hours in the refrigerator. Preheat your grill to medium-high heat. Remove the steak from the marinade, letting any excess drip off. Grill the steak for about 6-8 minutes on each side for medium-rare, or longer depending on your desired level of doneness. Use a meat thermometer to ensure accuracy. For medium-rare, aim for an internal temperature of 130-135°F. Let the steak rest for 5-10 minutes before slicing against the grain. Prepare the Mashed Sweet Potatoes: While the steak is marinating, boil the sweet potatoes in salted water until they are tender, about 15-20 minutes. Drain the sweet potatoes and return them to the pot. Add milk or cream, butter, cinnamon, salt, and pepper. Mash until smooth and creamy. Serve: Plate the mashed sweet potatoes and top with sliced espresso bourbon steak. Garnish with fresh parsley or thyme, if desired. Enjoy! Notes: For a richer flavor, use high-quality bourbon. Adjust the amount of espresso powder to your preference. Too much can make the steak bitter. If you don't have a grill, you can pan-sear the steak in a cast-iron skillet for similar results."
