As the United States approaches its 250th anniversary, a majority of Americans express pride in their country, according to results from a recent NPR/PBS News/Marist poll. However, the same survey indicates a significant portion of the population holds concerns about the nation's current trajectory. Eighty-five percent of American adults surveyed reported they feel proud of their country. This sentiment spans across party lines, with 87% of Democrats, 88% of Republicans, and 80% of independents sharing this view. Ninety-three percent of Black Americans, 82% of white Americans, and 75% of Hispanic Americans also expressed pride. While pride in the nation remains high, fewer Americans described themselves as 'very proud.' Forty-seven percent of respondents chose this description. These numbers show a decrease from 2021, when 58% of Americans identified as 'very proud,' and from 2004, when 69% did. College graduates showed the lowest level of 'very proud' sentiment at 36%, compared to 52% of non-graduates. The poll also explored Americans' views on the direction of the country. Sixty-seven percent of adults stated they believe the United States is heading in the wrong direction. Only 29% believe the country is moving in the right direction. This includes majorities across various demographic groups. Republicans largely believe the country is on the wrong path, with 91% holding this view. Among Democrats, 60% believe the country is moving in the right direction, while 36% believe it is headed in the wrong direction. Independents largely align with Republicans on this issue, as 75% expressed concern about the country's direction. Specific demographic breakdowns reveal further insights. Among those without a college degree, 70% believe the country is moving in the wrong direction, compared to 63% of college graduates. Men and women hold similar views, with 66% of men and 68% of women expressing concern about the country's direction. The poll surveyed 1,328 adults between June 3 and June 6. Researchers estimated a margin of error of +/- 3.7 percentage points for the total sample.
