Residents in Alamance, Orange, Randolph, Chatham, Montgomery, Moore, Lee, Harnett, Richmond, Scotland, and Hoke counties should move indoors immediately due to a Special Weather Statement issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Raleigh NC.

As of 10:44 AM EDT today, October 11, 2026, strong thunderstorms are being tracked by Doppler radar. These storms are moving northeast at 35 mph and are affecting areas including Chapel Hill, Burlington, Sanford, Asheboro, Graham, Southern Pines, Hillsborough, Raeford, Randleman, and Pittsboro. Wind gusts up to 50 mph are the primary hazard.

The NWS advises that gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects. Torrential rainfall is also occurring with these storms. Do not drive through flooded roadways. This Special Weather Statement is effective until 11:45 AM EDT.

For those traveling, this alert impacts Interstate 85 between Mile Markers 163 and 167; Interstate 40 between Mile Markers 139 and 162, and between Mile Markers 259 and 267; US 1 between Mile Markers 69 and 81; and Interstate 73 between Mile Markers 32 and 36, and between Mile Markers 42 and 46.

A Tornado Watch remains in effect for central North Carolina until 5:00 PM EDT.
