Residents in Carson and Armstrong counties should seek shelter indoors immediately due to a strong thunderstorm. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Amarillo, TX, issued a Special Weather Statement at 10:50 PM CDT, effective until 11:15 PM CDT tonight, September 24, 2026.
Doppler radar indicates a strong thunderstorm 5 miles northwest of Claude, moving northeast at 30 mph. Hazards include wind gusts up to 50 mph and pea-sized hail. These conditions could cause gusty winds to knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects. Minor hail damage to vegetation is also possible.
Locations impacted include Panhandle, Claude, Washburn, and Pantex. This also includes Interstate 40 between mile markers 86 and 107. Torrential rainfall is accompanying this storm and may lead to localized flooding. Drivers are advised not to drive through flooded roadways.
