Social Services Department Shifts LIHEAP Applications Online, Continues Indigent Burial Assistance
Arcadia's Social Services Department announced a significant change to its Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) application process. Effective immediately, the department will no longer accept LIHEAP walk-in clients. Residents needing energy assistance must now apply online, with no exceptions.
The Social Services Department focuses on improving the quality of life for people in need. It provides comprehensive county-wide social services. The department states its commitment to these services stems from the belief that the quality of life in our community directly impacts our ability to respond to the needs of our most troubled and vulnerable citizens.
DeSoto County Social Services has assisted hundreds of individuals and families with a wide range of needs. These include food, shelter, transportation, medical assistance, and energy assistance through programs administered within the department.
In addition to energy assistance, the department continues to manage indigent burial services. DeSoto County contracts with a local funeral home to provide indigent burial, specifically cremation. A local policy guides the disposal of deceased, indigent, and unclaimed bodies. If living relatives, friends, or responsible parties are also indigent, cremation assistance may be provided.
