The Apopka Fire Department is partnering with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) for Fire Prevention Week, Oct. 4-10. This year's campaign, 'Charge Into Fire Safety™: Safe Charging Is a Superpower,' educates residents on preventing fires caused by lithium-ion batteries through safe charging practices.

Lithium-ion batteries power many common electronic devices, including smartphones, laptops, e-bikes and power tools. Improper charging can lead to dangerous fires. Safe charging habits can protect homes and families.

Residents should use only manufacturer-approved chargers and cords. Uncertified alternatives pose significant risks. Charge devices on hard, flat surfaces away from flammable materials, not on soft surfaces like beds or couches where heat can build up. Immediately disconnect and remove from service any device that feels unusually hot, begins to swell, emits a strange odor or makes unusual noises.

The Apopka Fire Department and NFPA also recommend unplugging devices once fully charged to prevent overheating. For larger items like e-bikes, scooters and power tools, charge them outside whenever possible, and ensure charging areas do not block exits. When traveling on planes, keep devices in sight while charging and report any issues to flight attendants.

In addition to safe charging, Fire Prevention Week reinforces the importance of working smoke alarms and practicing a home fire escape plan.
