Alzheimer's Prevention Tips from UF Dietitian in Gainesville

A University of Florida dietitian is using Alzheimer's & Brain Awareness Month this June to share prevention strategies with Gainesville-area residents.
Jessica Alfonso-Rodriguez, a registered dietitian with UF/IFAS Extension Miami-Dade County, connects chronic disease management to cognitive health. She notes that controlling high blood pressure and diabetes supports brain health as people age. About 11% of Americans 65 and older live with Alzheimer's dementia, according to the 2026 Alzheimer's Disease Facts and Figures report.
Alfonso-Rodriguez recommends three diets linked to better brain and cardiovascular health: the Mediterranean diet, the DASH diet, and the MIND diet. All three emphasize whole grains, nuts, seeds, fruits, vegetables, fish, chicken and beans while limiting added sugar, sodium and saturated fats.
Physical activity delivers oxygen-rich blood to the brain, she said. Poor sleep impairs the brain's ability to remove toxins. Mental stimulation through new hobbies or classes creates connections between brain cells.
Alfonso-Rodriguez also recommends wearing helmets to prevent head injuries, avoiding smoking and working with healthcare providers to monitor chronic conditions. UF/IFAS Extension offices throughout Florida provide educational resources year-round.
