Washington State Statistics: - 8,176,300+ people estimated to live in the state as of 2024 - 43% of land is publicly owned (19.8 million acres) - 260 languages are spoken - 9 distinct ecoregions exist across the state Get help buying food for kids this summer (June 22, 2026): Kids in Washington may qualify for summer food benefits when school is not in session. These benefits can help families buy groceries during the summer months. This summer, as many as 577,000 Washington children will receive SUN Bucks through the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Summer Electronic Benefit Transfer program. The SUN Bucks benefits, a one-time payment of $120 per eligible child, will be deposited onto new SUN Bucks cards starting early June 2026. What's happening this month: 1. Governor Ferguson declares statewide wildfire emergency, issues statewide burn ban (08/03/26): Governor Bob Ferguson declared a statewide state of emergency due to drought conditions, unusually high temperatures and high winds all exacerbating record-setting wildfires. The declaration includes a statewide prohibition on most outdoor and agricultural burning through September 30, 2026. 2. Stay safe and care for Washington's parks this summer (07/22/26): Washington State Parks reminds visitors to celebrate safely during Independence Day and throughout the summer. When you visit, follow safety guidelines and help protect the shared outdoor spaces. 3. Watch for harmful algae in lakes and rivers (07/22/26): Harmful algal blooms can appear in warm weather and may look like green scum on the water. These blooms can make people and pets sick. Avoid contact with affected water and follow posted signs. 4. Stay safe during extreme heat in Washington (07/22/26): Hot weather can be dangerous, especially during heat waves. Drink plenty of water, stay in cool places, and avoid outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day. Check on older adults, children, and others who may be more at risk.
