Village of Wellington Implements New Micromobility Safety Requirements

On August 11, 2026, the Village adopted Micromobility Ordinance 2026-16 (Micromobility Devices on Public Rights-of-Way) and Ordinance 2026-17 (Micromobility Devices in Wellington Parks). The ordinances establish safety, age, speed and operational requirements intended to promote safe use of micromobility devices throughout Wellington.

On August 11, 2026, the Village adopted Micromobility Ordinance 2026-16 (Micromobility Devices on Public Rights-of-Way) and Ordinance 2026-17 (Micromobility Devices in Wellington Parks). The ordinances establish safety, age, speed and operational requirements intended to promote safe use of micromobility devices throughout Wellington. The new rules are now in effect. The Village is currently in an initial implementation period focused on education, community outreach and verbal warnings. This phased approach is designed to give residents and visitors an opportunity to understand the new requirements, ask questions and make any necessary adjustments. Beginning September 15, 2026, the Village will issue written warnings for violations. Beginning October 1, 2026, written citations will be issued. The regulations apply to: All electric bicycles, including Class 1, Class 2 and Class 3 e-bikes. All motorized scooters. Other non-human-powered micromobility devices (devices equipped with a motor) Note that golf carts are not micromobility devices and are regulated under a separate ordinance. The regulations apply on public roads, sidewalks, pathways, and public rights-of-way within Wellington. They do not apply within gated communities or on private property. Key Requirements: Minimum Age: Operators of non-human-powered micromobility devices must be 15 years of age or older. Government-Issued Photo Identification: Operators must carry government-issued photo identification that includes, at a minimum, their name, address, and date of birth. A school ID is not sufficient if it does not contain this required information. Speed Limit: The maximum speed on Village sidewalks and multi-modal pathways is 15 mph. Helmet Requirement: Riders and passengers under 16 years of age must wear a bicycle helmet that complies with Florida law. Obey Traffic Laws: All operators must follow applicable state, county, and Village traffic regulations. Where Micromobility Devices Are Not Permitted Non-human-powered micromobility devices are not permitted on public bridle trails. Additionally, these devices may not be operated at the following Village park locations: Wellington Town Center Neighborhood Parks The Heart Trail at Village Park during the days and hours indicated on posted signage The Village encourages all riders, parents, and guardians to review the new requirements and make safety a priority when operating or accompanying someone on a micromobility device.
