Cape Coral police stopped 76 drivers during an eight-hour impaired driving operation on May 28, issuing 67 citations and making five arrests.

Officers worked from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m., conducting traffic stops to detect impaired drivers. One driver faced DUI charges; four others faced arrest on separate charges. Officers issued five criminal citations.

Speed violations accounted for 22 citations. Officers also cited 15 drivers for distracted driving and issued 22 warnings. Of the 67 citations, 50 were for moving violations and 22 for non-moving violations.

The Florida Department of Transportation funded the operation through a sub-grant. Cape Coral ranks seventh among 38 agencies statewide in impaired driving-related traffic fatalities and serious injuries, according to the Highway Safety Matrix.

Police conduct impaired driving operations during evening and overnight hours, when such incidents occur most frequently. Residents can report suspected impaired drivers by calling 911.
