Cheyenne Police Nab Suspect in Downtown Burglary Spree

Cheyenne police arrested 34-year-old local resident Jason M. Harlan on Thursday evening after surveillance video from a downtown security camera captured him prying open the back door of a storefront at 17th Street and Capitol Avenue. Harlan faces multiple felony burglary charges stemming from at least five break-ins between April 15 and April 28, according to a Laramie County Sheriff's Office statement. The Casper Star-Tribune first reported the arrest, citing police logs showing stolen goods valued at over $12,000, including electronics and cash registers from businesses like the historic Plains Trading Company and a nearby coffee shop.

Investigators zeroed in on Harlan after matching his vehicle—a blue Ford F-150 registered in Laramie County—to footage timestamped at 2:17 a.m. on April 25 outside Dave's Tackle & Feed, a family-owned shop hit hardest in the spree with $4,500 in losses. Cheyenne Police Chief Mark Francisco praised the quick work of the Property Crimes Unit, noting in a Friday press release that tips from downtown merchants accelerated the probe. 'This series disrupted the tight-knit business community that defines our capital,' Francisco said.

The arrests come amid a 15% uptick in Cheyenne commercial burglaries this year, per Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation data, straining resources in a city of 65,000 where downtown revitalization efforts have drawn new shops. Harlan, who has prior misdemeanor theft convictions in Albany County, is held on $50,000 bail at the Laramie County Detention Center. No other suspects are being sought, and police urge business owners to review security footage amid ongoing vigilance.
