Mary & Martha House Needs Help After Hurricane Damage

DONATE NOW The devastati

DONATE NOW The devastating aftermath of Hurricane Helene has left our community facing significant challenges, and one of the places is the Mary & Martha House, a shelter that has been serving women and families in crisis for over 40 years.“Take care of your house first. If your house is good, help your neighbor,” has been a guiding principle for many in our community. Today, this metaphor has taken on a literal meaning as we urge everyone to prioritize their own recovery while extending support to neighbors in need. Our hearts go out to all those impacted by this storm, and we are hopeful for a swift and safe return to normalcy for everyone.Unfortunately, Mary & Martha House did not escape the storm’s wrath. During post-storm shelter checks on Friday, staff discovered flooding had left a water line of about one foot high throughout the entire building. Every piece of furniture in the shelter has been destroyed, and extensive damage has been done to the structure itself. Thankfully, all three families who were staying at the shelter had safely evacuated before the storm hit.We Need Your HelpWe are calling on the community for support. Mary & Martha House is in urgent need of financial contributions, volunteers, and temporary housing solutions for the families displaced by the storm. Here’s how you can help:Monetary Donations – We are accepting financial donations to help cover the cost of:Demolition of walls and cabinetsMold remediationAsbestos testingDisplacement costs for families currently without housingOther essential repairsYou can donate by clicking the “Donate” button on the top right of the webpage.Volunteer Hours – If you are able to help with labor-intensive work such as demolition and cleanup, please contact us directly to coordinate volunteer shifts. Your help is invaluable as we work to rebuild.Temporary Housing – We are seeking temporary accommodations for the families displaced by the storm. If you can offer an Airbnb or hotel stay, please reach out to us as soon as possible.Due to the extent of the damage, this recovery will be carried out in phases. At this time, we cannot accept donations of furniture until mold remediation is complete and the shelter is cleared for reconstruction. Once we have made the necessary repairs, we will be asking for donations of furniture, beds, and other household goods to help restore the shelter. If you are recovering from the storm, please prioritize your safety and your home first. For those in a position to assist, we humbly ask for your help. Mary & Martha House has weathered many challenges in its four decades of service, and with the community’s support, we are confident that we will rebuild and come back stronger. For more information on how to donate, volunteer, or offer temporary housing, please visit www.marymarthahouse.org or contact executive director Bill Chini. Thank you for your continued support during this difficult time. Together, we will help our neighbors and restore hope to those in need.About Mary & Martha House:Mary & Martha House provides emergency shelter, transitional housing, and supportive services for women and children in crisis. Since its founding, the shelter has been a vital resource for families in need, helping them achieve self-sufficiency and stability. Volunteer Opportunity: Storm Drain Marking Event

Protecting water quality is critical to the health of the environment in Stafford County, as it is situated within the Chesapeake Bay Watershed. Stafford County’s Environmental Division promotes and supports the placement of storm drain markers on stormwater infrastructure inlets. Friends of the Rappahannock (FOR) and Stafford County collaborate to identify storm drains without metal markers that are marked "No Dumping" or "Drains to Waterways.”There will be a storm drain marking volunteer opportunity on Saturday, April 11, 2026, from 9 am to noon in the Potomac Hills community. You can sign up at https://riverfriends.org/product/april-drain-marking/. No experience is necessary to participate, as the Friends of the Rappahannock group will provide training. All materials, such as markers, adhesives and gloves, will be provided to mark the storm drains. In an effort to reduce pollution, storm drain marking aims to educate the public that everything that goes down these drains ends up in the river and Bay. When it rains, stormwater that moves through properties and streets does not infiltrate into the ground; instead, it flows into surface water, carrying any debris along the way. Surfaces in urban areas collect pollutants, such as automobile oil, grease, brake pad dust and sediment from construction sites, bacteria from animal waste, excess lawn care fertilizers and pesticides. Rainfall containing these pollutants is carried to nearby drinking water supplies, waterways, beaches and properties. If you see any unmarked drains on private roads and neighborhoods, you can submit them to the Friends of the Rappahannock (FOR) by filling out a form. FOR will coordinate all details and provide supplies for chosen eligible projects. Once completed, Stafford County will collect the data on marked drains through this survey. For more information on Stafford County’s Storm Drain Marking Program, visit https://www.staffordcountyva.gov/government/departments_p-z/public_works/community_development/environmental/stormwater_management/storm_drain_marking_program.php.

Social Services to Hold Annual Golf Classic Fundraiser

"Stafford County Social Services seeks sponsors and teams for its 16th Annual Golf Classic for Stafford’s Kids. The tournament occurs Wednesday, June 3, 2026, at Augustine Golf Club, 75 Monument Drive, Stafford, VA. Social Services is also soliciting donations of golf-related items to raffle. This fundraiser provides for the needs of adults and children who are not covered by state or federal funding. “Participants and sponsors for this tournament will be helping to provide for children, families and seniors who need a little extra help,” said Director of Social Services Michael Muse. “We invite everyone to play golf and directly impact the local community.” One of the best ways to support the tournament is to become a sponsor. There are several different sponsorship opportunities: tournament sponsor, corporate sponsor, community sponsor, golf cart sponsor, hole sponsor, raffle item donations and goody bag sponsor. Golfers can also sign up individually for the tournament or play on a team. The cost to play includes 18 holes of golf, green and cart fees, and a barbecue lunch. Contributions may be tax-deductible. Please consult with your tax professional on the potential deductibility/amount of this contribution. Proceeds from the event go directly back to the community through various programs and events, including an annual foster family Kings Dominion Day, assistance with prescriptions, diapers and formula, warm clothing, grocery store gift cards, supporting teens aging out of foster care and needing help setting up their new life, and more. The department hosts an annual holiday program where the public can donate food and presents. Participants receive a holiday meal at Thanksgiving and Christmas. Additionally, they receive presents at Christmas. The golf tournament proceeds help purchase items not donated to the Holiday Program. Individual player sign-ups are $100, including play, fees and lunch. The cost is $400 for a foursome. Play starts with a shotgun start at 9:00 a.m. on June 3, 2026. To sign up for the tournament or to sponsor, please visit: www.staffordcountyva.gov/golfclassic. Contact Jodi Long with questions at [email protected]."
