ODC Targets Invasive Plants in Laketown Township
Crews from the Outdoor Discovery Center treated invasive species at Laketown Township Hall on Thursday, April 30, spraying for poison hemlock, common teasel and garlic mustard. Sam Frens, a conservation technician, led the work at the property on Beeline Road.
The Parks and Recreation Commission approved invasive species management at eight township locations this year. Beyond the township hall, crews will treat sites at Wolters Woods, Huyser Farm, Laketown Beach, Shore Acres, Sanctuary Woods, Farview and the Old Township Hall. Target species include poison hemlock, phragmites, Asian bittersweet, common teasel, purple loosestrife, autumn olive, Japanese knotweed and honeysuckle.
Invasive plants crowd out native species and disrupt local ecosystems. Poison hemlock poses health risks to humans and animals. Garlic mustard and Japanese knotweed spread rapidly without treatment.
