A Tropical Storm Warning has been issued for Tallapoosa County, including Alexander City and Dadeville, effective immediately. The National Weather Service in Birmingham, AL, issued the warning today, October 9, at 4:20 PM CDT. This warning is set to expire on October 10 at 12:30 AM UTC.
Residents should act now to complete preparations for hazardous wind, potential moderate flooding, and the possibility of a few tornadoes. Peak wind forecasts include speeds of 15-25 mph with gusts up to 50 mph, with a potential for sustained winds of 39 to 57 mph. Damage to awnings, carports, and sheds is possible, along with downed tree limbs and scattered power outages.
A Flood Watch is in effect, with additional rainfall of 1-3 inches expected, potentially leading to moderate flooding. Rivers and tributaries may swell, and localized inundation in low-lying areas is possible. Emergency plans should include the potential for moderate flooding. If you are in an area vulnerable to flooding, consider protective actions and heed any flood watches and warnings.
The situation is also somewhat favorable for tornadoes. Residents should include the potential for a few tornadoes in their emergency plans. If a tornado warning is issued, be ready to shelter quickly. Limited tornado damage is possible, including roof damage, overturned mobile homes, and downed trees.
