Tropical Storm Watch Issued for Tallapoosa County
A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Tallapoosa County, including Alexander City and Dadeville, with potential for tropical storm-force winds, moderate flooding, and tornadoes in the next 48 hours.
TALLAPOOSA COUNTY – The National Weather Service (NWS) in Birmingham, AL, has issued a Tropical Storm Watch for Tallapoosa County, effective today, October 8, 2026, at 10:05 AM CDT. This watch indicates that tropical storm-force winds are possible within the next 48 hours. Residents in Alexander City and Dadeville are specifically advised to prepare.
Efforts to protect property should be underway now. Complete all preparations before winds become hazardous. The NWS forecasts peak winds of 10-20 mph with gusts up to 40 mph, but potential exists for winds between 39 and 57 mph. Limited impacts may include damage to carports and sheds, broken tree limbs, and scattered power outages. Hazardous driving conditions are possible on bridges.
A threat of moderate flooding rain is also present, with peak rainfall amounts of 2-4 inches, and locally higher amounts. Emergency plans should account for potential flooding, which may lead to evacuations and rescues. Heed all flood watches and warnings. Rivers and tributaries could overflow, and floodwaters may enter some structures. Driving conditions could become hazardous due to rapid inundation in low-lying areas.
Furthermore, the situation is favorable for tornadoes. Emergency plans should include the potential for several tornadoes, some possibly intense. Those in manufactured homes or on boats should prepare to relocate to safe shelter. Listen for tornado watches and warnings and be ready to shelter quickly. Significant impacts, including considerable damage, power loss, and communications failures, are possible. For more information, visit ready.gov/hurricanes.
