Two studies published in the CDC’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report detailed the findings. One study analyzed survey responses from over 1,500 healthcare providers across the nation between 2022 and 2023. Researchers noted that nearly half of these providers lacked knowledge regarding alpha-gal syndrome's diagnosis and management. One-third of surveyed providers stated they had never heard of the syndrome.

Physicians should consider alpha-gal syndrome when evaluating patients presenting with allergic reactions, particularly those with a history of tick exposure. Early diagnosis allows for dietary adjustments and mitigation of severe allergic episodes. Individuals can reduce their risk of developing alpha-gal syndrome by taking precautions against tick bites, such as wearing protective clothing and using tick repellents when in wooded or grassy areas.
