Orleans County NY Tax Credit: Up to $1,000 Per Child
The Orleans County Department of Social Services is urging families with children to file a New York State income tax return this year to claim the Empire State Child Credit, even if they have no income.
For Tax Year 2025, New York expanded the credit to include households with the lowest or no income. Families can receive up to $1,000 per child under age 4 and up to $330 per child ages 4 to 16. The credit provides cash back and does not reduce Medicaid, SNAP, Cash Assistance, SSI, or Housing Assistance benefits.
"This program is specifically targeted to families with children, regardless of income, but you have to file a tax return to receive the benefit," Orleans County DSS Commissioner Holli Nenni said. "Families can receive this cash back even if they don't normally file taxes or haven't filed taxes in a while."
Families may qualify for additional federal and state tax credits. The funds can pay taxes owed or provide direct cash payments.
The credit applies to children under 17 years old. Unlike previous versions, the 2025 credit requires no earned income to qualify.
Families needing help preparing a tax return can find information and assistance at www.otda.ny.gov/childcredit.
