Albion residents seeking to obtain, amend, or renew pistol permits must now adhere to updated New York State laws that went into effect on September 1, 2022. The Orleans County Clerk’s Office is the designated location for all new pistol permit applications, requiring applicants to be residents of Orleans County.
For those applying for a new permit, the process involves an in-person visit to the Orleans County Clerk’s Office at 3 South Main Street, Albion, NY. Fingerprinting services, a mandatory step for all new applications, are conducted at the Orleans County Sheriff’s Office, located at 13925 State Route 31, Albion, NY 14411. Residents must schedule an appointment for fingerprinting by calling 585-589-5527.
Amending an existing pistol permit, whether to add or remove a firearm, also requires a visit to the Orleans County Clerk’s Office. Applicants must bring the pistol(s) in question, along with their current permit. The firearms must be unloaded and secured in a locked case. A bill of sale for the firearm must also be presented.
In the event of a lost or stolen pistol, immediate reporting to the Orleans County Sheriff’s Office is required. Residents can contact the Sheriff’s Office at 585-589-5527 to file a report.
Pistol permits are valid for three years and require renewal. Approximately three months before a permit’s expiration, the holder will receive a renewal notice by mail. To renew, individuals must bring this notice and their current pistol permit to the Orleans County Clerk’s Office.
New York State law also outlines specific procedures for transporting and carrying handguns. When transporting a handgun, it must be unloaded and kept in a locked case. When carrying a handgun, it must be concealed. The state prohibits carrying handguns in certain locations, including schools, government buildings, and places of worship. A comprehensive list of prohibited locations is available on the New York State Police website.
