Tropical Storm Watch Issued for Dougherty County; Prepare for Winds, Flooding, Tornadoes
A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Dougherty County, including Albany, by the NWS, effective October 8 at 5:22 PM EDT, warning of potential hazardous winds, moderate flooding, and several tornadoes; residents should prepare immediately for these severe conditions.
Dougherty County residents, including Albany, are advised to act immediately to prepare for a Tropical Storm Watch issued by the National Weather Service Tallahassee FL, effective October 8 at 5:22 PM EDT. This watch indicates the potential for tropical storm conditions within the next 48 hours.
The NWS forecasts peak winds of 10-20 mph with gusts up to 35 mph, but warns of potential wind speeds of 39 to 57 mph. Residents should plan for hazardous winds and work to secure property now. Potential impacts include damage to unanchored structures, broken tree limbs, and scattered power outages. Complete preparations before winds become hazardous.
A Flood Watch is also in effect, with 2-4 inches of rain possible, and locally higher amounts. Emergency plans should include potential for moderate flooding. Be prepared for evacuations and rescues. Heed all flood watches and warnings; failure to act could result in serious injury or loss of life. Rivers and small streams could overflow, leading to hazardous driving conditions and road closures.
Furthermore, conditions are favorable for several tornadoes, some potentially intense. Those in manufactured homes or boats should relocate to safe shelter. Listen for tornado watches and warnings and be ready to shelter quickly. Tornadoes can cause significant damage and hinder emergency operations.
