Severe Thunderstorm Warning Issued for San Luis Valley: 60 MPH Winds Expected

A Severe Thunderstorm Warning is in effect for Alamosa, Conejos, Costilla, Huerfano, Rio Grande, and Saguache Counties until 4:45 PM MDT, with 60 mph wind gusts expected.

Residents in Alamosa, Conejos, Costilla, Huerfano, Rio Grande, and Saguache Counties are urged to move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a building immediately. The National Weather Service in Pueblo has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning effective until 4:45 PM MDT today, October 11.

At 4:12 PM MDT, severe thunderstorms were detected along a line extending from 7 miles southwest of Mosca to near San Luis Valley Airport to 8 miles southeast of Sanford, moving northeast at 75 mph. The primary hazard is 60 mph wind gusts, confirmed by KALS ASOS measured gusts. Impacts are expected to include damage to roofs, siding, and trees.

Locations impacted include Alamosa, San Luis Valley Airport, Sanford, La Jara, Blanca, Hooper, Great Sand Dunes, La Veta Pass, Alamosa East, San Luis Lake, Red Wing, Fort Garland, Mosca, Bountiful, Blanca Peak, and various sections of the Spring Burn Scar south and north of Highway 160 in Costilla and Huerfano counties, as well as Indian Creek on the southeastern Spring Burn Scar.
