Gainesville, FL – The University of Florida's campus is home to a significant collection of historic structures, with 30 buildings and the Plaza of the Americas officially recognized on the National Register of Historic Places. Many of these landmarks are situated within the National Register Campus Historic District.
The district and its initial buildings were first registered in 1989. A significant expansion occurred in 2008, adding ten more buildings and the iconic Plaza of the Americas to the register. This designation highlights UF's commitment to preserving its architectural heritage.
Founded in 1906 with just two unfinished buildings and 102 students, the UF campus has grown dramatically. Today, it serves a combined population of approximately 70,000 students and employees, occupying over 900 buildings spread across nearly 2,000 acres.
The university offers resources for those interested in exploring its historical landscape. An interactive map is available to visually guide visitors through campus history, highlighting key buildings, landmarks, and ongoing preservation efforts. Additionally, UF Planning, Design & Construction provides access to documents, policies, and reference materials that support the institution's dedication to maintaining its historic sites.
