GAINESVILLE, FL – Residents in Eastern and Western Alachua County, including Gainesville, Alachua, and the University of Florida area, should be aware of a strong thunderstorm currently moving through the region. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Jacksonville has issued a Special Weather Statement, effective immediately.

As of 6:43 PM EDT, Doppler radar indicates a strong thunderstorm near the University of Florida, or near Gainesville, moving northwest at 10 mph. The primary hazard is wind gusts up to 40 mph. These gusty winds could potentially knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured outdoor objects.

This Special Weather Statement is in effect until 7:15 PM EDT tonight. The NWS advises all residents in the affected areas to monitor the weather situation closely and be alert for rapidly changing conditions. Take precautions to secure any outdoor items that could be moved by strong winds.
