A Daytona Beach man faces attempted murder charges after authorities say he critically injured an elderly couple and later shot an Ormond Beach police officer during a struggle at a local hospital. The incident began on September 20, leading to a multi-agency search and a subsequent altercation.

This incident impacts public safety and highlights the dangers faced by law enforcement officers. Residents should remain aware of ongoing investigations and the charges brought against individuals accused of violent crimes in our community.

The events unfolded around 6:43 p.m. on September 20 at Daytona College, located at 425 S. Nova Road. A 79-year-old man and a 74-year-old woman responded to a burglary alarm notification at the college. Upon arrival, they found a suspicious vehicle parked outside and discovered items inside the building that did not belong there, including a wallet, identification card, and suspected alcohol. While the couple contacted dispatch, the suspect, later identified as Michael Hightower, 40, of Daytona Beach, exited the building and entered the vehicle. He then allegedly struck the woman with the vehicle before getting out and physically assaulting both victims, punching and kicking them multiple times. Both victims were found in critical condition and transported to a hospital for treatment.

Following the assault, law enforcement agencies initiated a search for Hightower. Officers located him on foot near the 300 block of Clyde Morris Boulevard around 7:37 p.m. and took him into custody. After questioning, authorities transported Hightower to a Daytona Beach hospital for a medical evaluation. Around 3:20 a.m. on September 21, Hightower became involved in a physical altercation with an Ormond Beach police officer assigned to guard him. During the struggle, Hightower allegedly grabbed the officer's firearm, shooting the officer in the leg. The officer sustained non-life-threatening injuries and is expected to make a full recovery.

Hightower is currently charged with two counts of attempted felony murder. Police anticipate additional charges as the investigation continues. The Ormond Beach Police Department has not released further details at this time.
