Tropical Storm Watch Issued for Shelby County: Prepare for High Winds and Flooding
A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Shelby County, including Columbiana, Pelham, and Alabaster, urging residents to prepare for high winds and potential moderate flooding from early Saturday morning until Saturday afternoon.
A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Shelby County, including Columbiana, Pelham, and Alabaster, by the National Weather Service in Birmingham, AL, effective October 8 at 10:27 PM CDT. Residents should prepare for hazardous wind conditions and potential moderate flooding.
Equivalent Tropical Storm force winds of 30-40 mph with gusts up to 55 mph are expected from early Saturday morning until Saturday afternoon. Damage to porches, awnings, carports, sheds, and unanchored mobile homes is possible. Expect many large tree limbs to break and some trees to snap or uproot. Scattered power and communications outages are also anticipated. Move to safe shelter before hazardous winds begin. Remaining efforts to protect property should be completed as soon as possible.
A Flood Watch is also in effect, with 1-3 inches of rain expected and locally higher amounts possible. Moderate rainfall flooding may prompt evacuations and rescues. Rivers and tributaries could swell and overspill their banks, especially in vulnerable areas. Small streams, creeks, and ditches may overflow. Consider protective actions if you are in a flood-prone area and heed any flood watches and warnings. Failure to act may result in serious injury or loss of life.
The tornado threat is currently low, with no tornadoes expected. However, showers and thunderstorms with gusty winds may still occur. Stay informed of the latest forecast changes.
