SHELBY COUNTY, AL – The National Weather Service (NWS) in Birmingham, AL, has issued a Tropical Storm Warning for Shelby County, effective immediately as of October 9 at 6:57 PM CDT. Residents in Columbiana, Pelham, and Alabaster should shelter in place as hazardous wind conditions are expected to begin early Saturday morning and continue through Saturday afternoon.

Peak wind gusts of up to 65 mph are anticipated, with sustained winds between 30-40 mph. Property protection efforts should now be complete. The NWS indicates limited wind damage is possible.

A Flood Watch is also in effect, with an additional 2-4 inches of rain expected, and locally higher amounts possible. Moderate flooding could prompt evacuations and rescues. Rivers and tributaries may overflow, and low-lying areas are at risk of rapid inundation. Driving conditions will become hazardous, and some road and bridge closures are likely. Heed all flood watches and warnings; consider protective actions if you are in a flood-vulnerable area.

The NWS currently does not expect tornadoes. Stay informed of the latest forecast. The warning expires on October 10 at 3:00 AM UTC.
