Tropical Storm Warning Issued for Shelby County: Prepare for Winds & Flooding
A Tropical Storm Warning has been issued for Shelby County, including Columbiana, Pelham, and Alabaster, bringing hazardous winds up to 65 mph and potential moderate flooding from additional rainfall, with residents urged to shelter in place and prepare for impacts starting early Saturday morning.
SHELBY COUNTY, AL – The National Weather Service (NWS) in Birmingham, AL, has issued a Tropical Storm Warning for Shelby County, effective immediately as of October 9 at 6:57 PM CDT. Residents in Columbiana, Pelham, and Alabaster should shelter in place as hazardous wind conditions are expected to begin early Saturday morning and continue through Saturday afternoon.
Peak wind gusts of up to 65 mph are anticipated, with sustained winds between 30-40 mph. Property protection efforts should now be complete. The NWS indicates limited wind damage is possible.
A Flood Watch is also in effect, with an additional 2-4 inches of rain expected, and locally higher amounts possible. Moderate flooding could prompt evacuations and rescues. Rivers and tributaries may overflow, and low-lying areas are at risk of rapid inundation. Driving conditions will become hazardous, and some road and bridge closures are likely. Heed all flood watches and warnings; consider protective actions if you are in a flood-vulnerable area.
