Beach Hazards, Coastal Flooding, and High Surf Expected for MD and VA

Residents in Maryland Beaches, Accomack, and Northampton counties should prepare for a combination of severe weather conditions starting today, September 23.

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Wakefield, VA, has issued multiple alerts, including a Beach Hazards Statement, Coastal Flood Advisory, Coastal Flood Warning, and High Surf Advisory.

A Beach Hazards Statement is in effect through this evening, indicating a high risk of rip currents. Inexperienced swimmers should remain out of the water due to these dangerous conditions. The NWS advises remaining out of the water to avoid hazardous swimming conditions.

A Coastal Flood Advisory is active until 4 PM EDT this afternoon, with up to one foot of inundation expected in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways. This will be followed by a Coastal Flood Warning from 4 PM this afternoon to 4 AM EDT Friday, where one to two feet of inundation above ground level is expected. This level of flooding can close numerous roads, threaten homes and businesses, and result in an elevated threat of property damage. If travel is required, do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth. Take necessary actions to protect flood-prone property.

Additionally, a High Surf Advisory is in effect until 6 PM EDT Thursday, with large breaking waves of 8 to 12 feet expected in the surf zone. Inexperienced swimmers should remain out of the water due to these dangerous surf conditions.
